You have been invited to the "Discover NASA's Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS)" Webinar
A key resource for wildland firefighters and managers around the world is NASA's Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS), which is part of the NASA's Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS). NASA FIRMS provides MODIS and VIIRS -derived active fire /hotspot data in easy to use formats. It was originally designed to get data in to the hands of natural resource managers, who don't have the time, or expertise to process the original HDF files. FIRMS services include a fire map, WMS and WMS-Time web services, file downloads (SHP, CSV, KML) and an email alert service, which notifies users of fires in or around their area of interest.
This webinar will provide a brief explanation of the data sources, an overview of the FIRMS services including how to download the data and how to sign up for email alerts. The webinar will highlight some of the new features recently added to the fire map as well as discuss some of the caveats that should be considered when using the data available through FIRMS.
Event: Discover NASA's Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS)
When: Wednesday 23 May 2018, 02:00 PM - 03:00 PM
Time Zone: Eastern Daylight Savings Time (UTC/GMT-4)
Speaker:
Diane Davies, NASA LANCE Operations Manager
Diane has been operations manager for NASA's Land Atmosphere Near real-time Capability for EOS (LANCE) for six years and worked with near-real time satellite data for over 20 years. She is particularly interested in how satellite data and derived products can be made more accessible to end-users. Diane worked as a remote sensing and GIS specialist in Namibia for seven years managing a direct broadcast satellite receiving station and using near real-time satellite data to monitor fires, floods and vegetation. She then worked at the University of Maryland (UMD) for six years where she was Principal Investigator for FIRMS (Fire Information for Resource Management System), a system that delivers global MODIS fire locations in easy to use formats. Diane holds an MSc in Land Resource Management from Cranfield University, UK and a BSc in Geography from Nottingham University, UK.
